IGN has unveiled the world’s first look at the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog movie. It’s a motion poster of the titular character in the shadows, and reaction to the character’s design appears to be mixed at best.
The motion poster for the Sonic the Hedgehog movie begins with the character streaking by a few times with nothing to see but a blue blur as he exits the frame. He then enters view again in the distance going from right to left as he collects a trio of his series’ iconic gold rings.
Sonic the comes toward the screen before suddenly stopping right before us. The character stays in the shadows, so we’ll have to wait until Paramount Pictures decides to fully unveil his movie look to the world. But there are plenty of details you can still catch from his design.
For one, he’s furry. Really furry. His renowned mane/hair looks to have a lot of fluff to it. And you can see plenty of hair along his arms in the poster. The only other real detail of note are his shoes. Director Jeff Fowler and his team stuck with Sonic’s iconic red and white sneakers. Speaking to IGN, the movie’s producer, Neil Moritz, stated “We looked at every different variation of what shoes he’s worn and we’re trying to pay homage to that and also make it current and present day in what we think a Sonic of today would wear.”
The Sonic the Hedgehog movie will be live action, so a design needed to be achieved that would make the character fit in the real world. Ben Schwartz will voice the CG Sonic. James Marsden will play the live action lead in Tom Wachowski. Jim Carrey joined the project to take on the lead of Sonic’s nemesis, Dr. Ivo Robotnik.
We’ll have to wait for a full reveal before we can truly judge the design decisions for the Sonic the Hedgehog movie. Hopefully we won’t have too long to wait. The movie is racing to theaters on November 8th, 2019.
