Frosty the Snowman is a classic family holiday movie created in 1969 about a snowman brought to life through the accidental magic of a failed magician’s hat. The hat, when placed upon the head of a Frosty, brings the inanimate snowman to life. This miracle delights a group of children that quickly befriend him. Through a heart-warming story of friendship and Christmas spirit, we see Frosty bond with his group of friends, triumph—with the help of old Santa Claus (of course)—over evil, and become the festive icon that we have come to know and love over the years.

Frosty the Snowman: 5 Fast Facts

Frosty was a Christmas favorite long before the movie was released.

“Frosty the Snowman,” the carol that we all know and love, was written about 19 years before the release of the animated classic special. It was written by Walter “Jack” Rollins and Steve Nelson. This release came on the heels of the excitement created by “Rudolph” only one year earlier in 1949. The song was a fast favorite around Christmas time— although the original lyrics to the song made no direct mention of the holiday! When the special was released it managed to take all the charm in the song and expand it into a visual medium for everyone to enjoy.

There’s a reason why Frosty looks like a Holiday Card.

When Arthur Rankin, Jr. and Jules Bass began the work of creating Frosty the Snowman in a special, they had a very specific idea of what they thought it should look like. They desperately wanted the idyllic and charming nature of a Christmas Card to be displayed on the screens of every person watching. So when it came time to create the artwork they hired Paul Coker, Jr., a greeting card and Mad magazine artist to do all of the character and background drawings for the film.

Funny people are everywhere in Frosty the Snowman.

Not only did Rankin and Bass hire someone associated with a comedy magazine to make the artwork of Frosty the Snowman, but when it came time to cast the movie, they hired, not one but three different comedians to make up the cast of characters. Jimmy Durante, Billy De Wolfe, and Jackie Vernon were all prominent comedians of the time and voiced the Narrator, Professor Hinkle, and Frosty (respectively).

Frosty was such a hit that he starred in four sequels.

Only two of the sequels came from Frosty’s original family at Rankin/Bass, but all four feature our favorite, friendly, fearless snow-friend. You can find Frosty in the following films: Frosty’s Winter Wonderland— even a reprisal role of Jackie Vernon for Frosty’s voice in this one, Rudolph and Frosty’s Christmas in July, Frosty Returns—the first Frosty special to be created outside of Rankin/Bass was made by CBS—and then, lastly, in the 2005 film, The Legend of Frosty the Snowman. While each film had a unique cast there were many returned of original characters and mentions back to the original special and song in each one.

Frosty’s fingers are a true mystery.

When watching Frosty the Snowman there are clear shots of his snowy fingers throughout the special, and it is undeniable to anyone, that the snowman only had four digits on each hand. Despite the glaringly obvious fact, in a moment of continuity error when Frosty tries to count for his friends, he counts to five and miraculously has five fingers. Perhaps this is a simple error on the part of the animation team, or maybe that’s just part of Frosty’s Christmas magic. We may never know!
