Netflix has officially ordered a standalone Punisher series. We can’t say we’re surprised, but we can say that we are 100% okay with this happening.
In a report from Entertainment Weekly, Marvel has ordered a new Netflix series starring the hero introduced in Daredevil: Season 2.
Jon Bernthal’s Punisher was one of the highlights this past season. He brought a lot of the emotional impact that the character really needs to be believable. Thankfully, he will be reprising his role in the new series.
In case you’re reading this without watching Daredevil, the Punisher is a vengeful veteran named Frank Castle. After the murder of his wife and kids, he brings a lethal kind of justice to New York.
The Punisher will be Marvel’s sixth Netflix series so far. So far, both Daredevil and Jessica Jones have been incredible successful both critically and commercially. These prove that the success were not just a one-off. Still to come are Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and The Defenders, the show where they all assemble.
At this point, we feel like Marvel could make just about anything with Netflix. We think that the darker, more grounded tone of the series are not only great for stretching their budget, but also for creating great content that feels refreshing next to the campy movies.
So far, the movies are where you go for fun, action movies that focus on some of our favorite heroes. The Netflix shows, are where you go for dramatic stories that show off both the hero and the villain, with much less black-and-white personalities.
Are you excited for a Punisher series? You can be sure we’ll be telling you much more as we find out.
