According to Variety, HBO has just employed four writers to put together potential spinoffs for Game of Thrones. There is no timeline for these quite yet, but the writers will be given as much or as little time as they need. The writers for these spinoffs are Max Borenstein (Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla vs. Kong), Jane Goldman (Kingsman: The Golden Circle), Brian Helgeland (Legend), and Carly Wray (Mad Men and The Leftovers). They’ll be working directly with author George R. R. Martin, who will also be producing the shows with D.B. Weiss and David Benioff (who both wrote for Game of Thrones).
It seems that HBO wants the scripts written but is not committed to making the shows until they see something they like. However, we did see an episode in Game of Thrones that was very off the books and featured a look into Jon Snow’s early past. Martin also wrote The World of Ice & Fire: The Untold History of Westeros and the Game of Thrones, so it’s entirely possible they might base a spinoff on that.
Indeed, the world of Game of Thrones is certainly filled with enough intrigue and unexplored characters to warrant spin-offs. Though it does feel odd to do so while the main show is still running, on season 7 and already signed for an 8th. However these are very early stages, so we shall see what the four writers come up with.
