According to Entertainment Weekly, IM Global and games developer Rebellion (responsible for the Sniper Elite series) are teaming up to make a live-action TV series titled Judge Dredd: Mega City One. The poster’s tagline is “four hundred million citizens, every one a potential criminal,” a daring phrase that certainly inspires the dread so signature to the comics.
The show will be set after the comics and not the old 1995 or 2012 versions, as much as we love Sylvester Stallone and Karl Urban. It is a future where East coast of the US has been so overpopulated that crime has reached exponential rates, as it would because of simple statistical math.
But statistics don’t matter here! This world is about getting those darn thugs and making sure they don’t commit any more crimes, a good motivation for any aspiring hero such as Judge Dredd. Though Dredd is a part of an elite futuristic cop that play the part of judge, jury, and executioner. What could possibly go wrong with such a well-intentioned concept, we will have to wait to see the show itself.
As the upcoming show is still in early development, there has been no mention who will be cast or who is writing the series. However the executive producers include Mark Stern (known for Battlestar Galactica and Defiance at Syfy), Jason and Chris Kingsley from Rebellion, and Stuart Ford. All of these folk were executive producers of the 2012 Dredd film, so it will be interesting to see if they can improve upon what might not have been the best adaption of the famous character.
