Well, it’s official. One of Matt Murdock’s greatest adversaries is set to return in the third season of Marvel’s Daredevil. Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk, perhaps better known as Kingpin, is coming back to Hell’s Kitchen.
D’Onofrio did an excellent job portraying the complex and layered villain of Daredevil’s first season. He then returned for Daredevil Season 2. Fisk is only part of limited arc towards the end of Season 2. He orchestrates the release of the incarcerated Punisher, making it clear to Matt Murdock that Fisk is, in fact, running the prison he’s being “held” in.
No story details have been announced up to this point. We know essentially nothing about it other than Fisk’s existence. That, and the fact that it likely takes place after all of the Netflix Marvel shows that have aired before it.
However, we do know that Daredevil’s third season will also see a new showrunner taking over the reins. Erik Oleson will be taking over for Season 2 showrunners Marco Ramirez and Douglas Petrie. Ramirez and Petrie moved from Daredevil’s second season over to The Defenders. While Oleson comes over after serving as an Executive Producer on Amazon’s The Man in the High Castle.
Daredevil has put out two (some may argue one and a half) great seasons of television for Netflix. When Season 1 aired it really made fans of the genre take notice to Netflix and Marvel’s efforts. It’ll be quite interesting to see if Erik Oleson can continue the level of pedigree that at least the Daredevil series has brought to the table.
Netflix and Marvel haven’t hinted at any type of release window for Daredevil’s third season. Marvel’s The Punisher is hitting the streaming service on November 17th. Marvel’s Jessica Jones‘ second season is likely slated after that somewhere in early 2018. And it looks like Marvel’s Luke Cage will follow that. We can probably expect Matt Murdock’s return sometime around Spring or Summer.
