Syfy’s upcoming Krypton is a bit of an anomaly. When you take something as iconic to comics as the word Krypton, it brings with it a certain level of expectation. Superman for one. But within Syfy’s upcoming show, Kal-El doesn’t even exist.
Krypton comes to us courtesy of David Goyer, writer of both Man of Steel and The Dark Knight. Damien Kindler (Sleepy Hollow) helped Goyer flesh out the show’s world and will serve as executive producer and showrunner.
The plot takes place 200 years before the birth of Kal-El, the alien that would later come to Earth and become Clark Kent/Superman. Instead, it centers around Superman’s grandfather, Seg-El. Within the timeframe of Krypton, the House of El has been embarrassed and shamed. For what, we don’t know yet. But it’s safe to imagine that there is a conspiracy afoot.
The gist of the show is Seg-El’s continually attempt to redeem the El name. Simultaneously, Seg-El is attempting to restore his home planet of Krypton back to its previous glory. Thus relieving it from the political corruption that has entrapped it. The show is said to feature other key characters that we know from Superman’s run within his comics. Doomsday and Hawkgirl were specifically mentioned previously by DC.
As far as impressions go, Krypton doesn’t look bad. It just looks generic and overly safe. There’s nothing other than the continually use of the “S” logo that makes this feel as though it’s a Superman property. But then again, the level of plot detail we get from today’s first trailer doesn’t do much to shed light on the overall narrative anyway.
We’ll have to wait to see if Krypton is striving for greatness. Or whether it’s a generic superhero show attempting to piggyback off of the Superman name. It’s only a few months more before we head off to this iconic alien planet and find out its history for ourselves. Krypton premieres on SYFY March 21st.
