2018 looks to be the year that the Netflix portion of the Marvel Cinematic Universe returns to form. And it sounds as though we’ll be capping the year off with the franchise that started it all in Daredevil Season 3.
Following the abysmal effort that was Season 1 of Iron Fist in early 2017, the band came together and The Defenders were born. The television version of The Avengers was solid when it debuted that August. It earned a 76% on Rotten Tomatoes, but it didn’t exactly blow critics’ socks off. The Punisher then rounded 2017 out when the character received his first solo story. And again, it was serviceable but not spectacular, with a favorable rate of 62% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Enter 2018, the year that Netflix and Marvel looked to shake the stagnation off. Each member of The Defenders would get a new season to call their own. Jessica Jones Season 2 started the year off the bang with another fantastic outing. The Krysten Ritter led sequel series sits at 83% on Rotten Tomatoes.
We saw Season 2 of Luke Cage finally hit the network in June too. It’s currently holding a Rotten Tomatoes average that is besting Jessica Jones’ Season 2 score. Season 2 of Cage has a 84% Rotten Tomatoes average.
Next up on the Netflix Marvel slate is Iron Fist’s second season which is premiering on September 7th. Those who saw extended footage at San Diego Comic-Con rave that there’s a lot to be excited about. And the series has a new showrunner in Raven Metzner who can hopefully bring us something much better than Season 1 (it shouldn’t be hard).
Finally, that brings us to today’s news. Daredevil Season 3 is confirmed to be coming our way sometime in 2018 as well. Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos spoke in a Quarter 2 earnings video and confirmed that the series would be returning this year:
“In the short term, we’ve got new seasons coming up, in the second half of this year, of Orange is the New Black, Ozark, Iron Fist, Daredevil, Narcos, the finale of House of Cards, the follow-up series to Making a Murderer“
Sarandos didn’t specify a window in which we would get Daredevil Season 3. But with Iron Fist’s premiere in September, it’s likely our original Netflix Defender will see his return come sometime in November or December.
