Making a Murderer was an incredible success for Netflix when it debuted back in 2015. In just a couple of weeks, we’ll get to see the series’ follow up and further explore the case that put Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey behind bars for the murder of Teresa Halbach. We got our first tease of those events today thanks to Netflix’s Making a Murderer Part 2 trailer.
Making a Murderer Part 2 is being helmed by the same team that brought us the first installment. The duo consists of Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos, credited as creators, directors, and executive producers on the documentary series.
The Making a Murderer Part 2 trailer seems to indicate that the spotlight will be on defense attorney Kathleen Zellner for much of the sequel series. Zellner is known for her efforts in many wrongful conviction cases, and hopes to see Avery exonerated of all charges. Here is a statement that Zellner has on her website regarding Avery’s 2007 conviction and sentencing:
“The deeper we dig into the Avery conviction, the more evidence we uncover of his innocence. It does not matter how long it takes, what it costs or what obstacles we have to overcome — our efforts to win Mr. Avery’s freedom will never stop. Giving up on his case would be accepting that someone else got away with murder and our justice system is just too incompetent, indifferent and/or inflexible to recognize this huge mistake and rectify it. We are going to keep ringing the doorbell at this so called Court of Justice until someone answers it.”
The events of Part 2 took place a couple of years ago at this point, so it’s entirely possible you already know where the cases of Avery and Dassey currently stand. If you don’t, then today’s Making a Murderer Part 2 trailer proves that the documentary’s October 19th premiere should take us on one hell of a ride.
