Game of Thrones Season 8 Premiere Date Announced with Teaser

90 days, folks. Three months exactly and we’ll be flipping our televisions onto the Home Box Office network to see the beginning of the end to one of history’s fantasies. We knew it was coming in April, but HBO has now officially announced the Game of Thrones Season 8 premiere date.

Many had HBO on the tube last night to see the premiere of True Detective‘s third season. And they were likely all pleasantly surprised to see a new Game of Thrones teaser trailer there to greet them. The footage on display is just that, a teaser, and doesn’t look to actually be representative of the show’s final season at all.

The teaser puts the focus on three of the Starks that look to be back in Winterfell during the early portion of the final season. We see Jon first, and as he walks past the monument of his mother Lyanna, we hear her dying works to her brother Ned, “You have to protect him.”

The focus then shifts to Sansa and Arya separately as they too walk through Winterfell’s crypts. Sansa passes her own mother, Catelyn Stark, before the focus shifts to Arya. During this portion of the teaser Catelyn utters this heartbreakingly true quote from early in the show: “All this horror that’s come to my family, it’s all because I couldn’t love a motherless child.”

She, of course, is referencing her distain for Jon, seeing him as the walking embodiment of Ned’s infidelity. However, we now know that’s far from the truth. And then we hear from Ned himself as Jon stops to admire his father’s tomb. “You are a Stark” he recalls his father saying. “You may not have my name, but you have my blood.”

The trio then group together and continue their walk in the crypt’s depths. They then stop suddenly as they’re confronted with three tombs, each of their own. Their torches then extinguish as the atmosphere quickly turns chillingly cold. Jon and Arya pull their swords searching for the looming threat. The trailer then concludes with one thing being for sure – winter is here.

The teaser does offer one final detail that fans have been begging for – the Game of Thrones Season 8 premiere date. HBO has now confirmed the final season will begin on April 14th. The wait is nearly over.
