With the series arriving late next month, DC figured it was time to give us our first look at their next DC Universe exclusive with their Swamp Thing trailer. It’s hard to gleam much from the quick cutting footage, but the reportedly “hard R” tone seems to still be in play.
The synopsis from DC reads, “Swamp Thing follows Abby Arcane as she investigates what seems to be a deadly swamp-born virus in a small town in Louisiana but soon discovers that the swamp holds mystical and terrifying secrets. When unexplainable and chilling horrors emerge from the murky marsh, no one is safe.”
Andy Bean plays the titular character while in human form as Alec Holland. Derek Mears, famous for portraying Jason Voorhees in the past, takes on the role of Holland while in Swamp Thing mode. Crystal Reed plays the aforementioned Abby Arcane.
The series was co-written and co-ran by the now renowned horror technician, Gary Dauberman. Dauberman made news earlier today when it was revealed he would be writing a fresh adaptation of Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot. In September, Dauberman spoke about the tone of the series which is on display in the Swamp Thing trailer.
Dauberman stated that his team “set out to make Swamp Thing as hard R as we could and go graphic with the violence, with the adult themes and make it as scary as possible. Because we’re doing it through the DC streaming service, they really pushed us, although they didn’t have to push hard, for us to go as extreme as we could.”
He continued, citing where the series’ setting stems from by saying “We really took our inspiration from the Alan Moore run in Swamp Thing, this landmark I think run. Fans of that series will know it gets pretty weird and extreme and scary.”
With the Swamp Thing trailer here to tease us, we now only have to wait about five weeks before the show’s May 31st debut on DC Universe.
