During Hulu’s 2019 presentation today, the streaming service had all sorts of goodies for us. But perhaps most exciting of all was their unveiling of the first Handmaid’s Tale Season 3 trailer, which confirmed the series would return next month.
We knew the award winning show would be returning when Hulu confirmed as much nearly a year ago to the day. But today we get our first look at the revolution brewing within Gilead thanks to Hulu’s two minute plus trailer of footage.
The Season 3 trailer begins with June suggesting through inner dialogue that there really weren’t any repercussions to her actions at the end of Season 2. She explains that, “Heresy. That’s what you get punished for. Not for being part of the resistance. Because officially, there is no resistance. Not for helping people escape. Because officially, there is not such thing as escape.”
Following her decision to stay behind in the Season 2 finale, June has been recruiting secretly from within Gilead. We see Bradley Whitford’s Commander Joseph Lawrence early in the trailer. Now a part of the main cast, he seems to be dropping a double entendre to June when he asks “you working hard?” “Yes”, she replies with a wry smile.
The Handmaid’s Tale Season 3 trailer then has June noting that “If I’m going to change things, I’m going to need allies.” And the footage then hints at some of the people within Gilead that may now be fully on board with helping to raise the revolution – including Yvonne Strahovski’s Serena Waterford. There’s also a vague suggestion that Ann Dowd’s Aunt Lydia could be on board with an uprising now too.
Perhaps the best moment of The Handmaid’s Tale Season 3 trailer was the confirmation that the show’s return isn’t far off. Hulu revealed that the Season 3 premiere will begin streaming on June 5th.
