We may not get to see it until next year, but HBO is already teasing what to expect from the next season of Westworld. During the Game of Thrones series finale, the network dropped the first Westworld Season 3 trailer, proving we’ll be seeing a dramatic shift in the show’s setting.
The majority of the Westworld Season 3 trailer seemingly sports no ties to the world we’ve seen over created over the last two seasons. Which makes sense given how Season 2 concluded. Many folks didn’t even realize the trailer was for Westworld at all until its culmination.
Aaron Paul’s unnamed character is the lead in the footage. He’s fed up with the way the world is operating around him, taking on criminal jobs to help make ends meet with with the aid of other new characters played by Kid Cudi and Marshawn Lynch.
Set to Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon”, Paul’s character explains his depression, saying “They said they would make a better world. Smooth away the rough edges. But that was a lie. I guess the rough edges are the only thing I’m hanging onto.”
As the footage ramps up, the character says, “I think if I’m going to get on with my life I’m going to have to find something, someone – real.” Then the reveal comes, as we see Evan Rachel Wood’s Dolores Abernathy emerge from the shadows, struggling to walk towards him due to an unspecified injury.
The Westworld Season 3 trailer is intriguing yet cryptic – which fits the show perfectly. Everything within the world we’re seeing looks quite futuristic. This is likely the real world, as the show itself is set in the future, but there is a possibility we could be seeing glimpses of Futureworld which existed as a sequel to the original 1973 film.
We’ve got plenty of time to speculate, as HBO confirmed in the trailer’s conclusion that Season 3 of the show won’t be arrive until 2020.
