Personally, one of my favorite aspects of Supergirl is that it has never been about the Man of Steel; it focuses entirely on Kara and her story, with Superman as a mere sidenote. So I couldn’t care less whether or not he actually appears on the show. However, if they are going to feature him, I’m glad that they are actually casting someone to play him — as opposed to those horrendously cheesy CGI glimpses we got before.
Superman and his mild-mannered alter ego will appear in the first two episodes of Supergirl Season 2, as the show makes its way to the CW this fall. Casting is currently underway, indicating that big screen star Henry Cavill will not be playing the role.
Executive Producer Andrew Kreisberg said in a statement, “Greg, Ali and I are beyond thrilled to welcome Clark Kent and his slightly-more-famous alter ego to the world of ‘Supergirl. Superman will be appearing in the first two episodes of the new season and we cannot wait to see who next dons the red cape!” Some fans have speculated on the possibility of Smallville‘s Tom Welling taking on the role, but there is nothing to support that at this point.
It’s unclear at this point whether the iconic DC superhero will appear in more than two episodes. As he is Kara’s cousin, that seems plausible; however, if that is the case, my only hope is that he doesn’t hijack the show. Based on statements from the showrunners, though, that doesn’t seem likely – they have said all along that they want the focus to be on Supergirl.
Season 2 will air this fall on the CW, and will remain in its previous time slot (Mondays at 8 pm EST). Stay tuned for further updates in regards to casting.
