There are 30 Netflix original series either in development or released. In 2017, Netflix plans to double this number. This time, they are going big on reality shows.
Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos made the announcement during a New York City conference yesterday(via Variety). Netflix sees unscripted shows as a way to broaden its global audience in places like South Korea.
One way to increase the number of Netflix original series is by spending its $6 billion budget on creating and acquiring original content. The ultimate goal is to make at least half of the shows and films available Netflix originals.
Keep in mind, this doesn’t necessarily mean these will all be shows like Stranger Things. That was actually the first series created and produced in-house at Netflix. Much like the recent Gilmore Girls revival, Netflix is looking to purchase the rights to series and have other studios produce them. Netflix will basically become the distributor.
Next year, the Netflix original series will include Lemony Snickett’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, The Defenders, The Punisher, Iron Fist, and the second season of Stranger Things. We just hope that these additional shows share a similar level of quality. As we all know, not every Netflix show is created equal.
