Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia, First Image from Netflix’s The Witcher Series

We’ve known since August that Henry Cavill was interested in playing Geralt of Rivia in Netflix’s The Witcher series. After he put down his cape, the actor got his wish and was cast in the lead role. Today, Netflix has provided our first look at Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia. And it’s, well it’s something.

Netflix’s Twitter account provided the above camera test debuting Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia in full makeup and hair. Something just feels off about the portrayal though. The look isn’t necessarily bad, but Cavill certainly isn’t imbuing the character in this critical public first look.

Outside of Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia, earlier this month Freya Allan was confirmed for the role of Ciri in the show and Yennefer would be played by Anya Chalotra. The following casting details for the series have been announced today too:

  • Eamon Farren – Cahir
  • Joey Batey – Jaskier
  • Lars Mikkelsen – Stregobor
  • Royce Pierreson – Istredd
  • Maciej Musial – Sir Lazlo
  • Wilson Radjou-Pujalte – Dara
  • Anna Shaffer – Triss
  • Rebecca Benson – Marilka
  • Shane Attwooll – Nohorn
  • Luke Neal – Vyr
  • Matthew Neal – Nimir
  • Tobi Bamtefa – Danek
  • Sonny Serkis – Martin
  • Roderick Hill – Fletcher
  • Inge Beckmann – Aridea
  • Charlotte O’Leary – Tiffania
  • Natasha Culzac – Toruviel
  • Amit Shah – Torque
  • Tom Canton – Filavandrel

With the cast fully assembled, production is now underway for Netflix’s The Witcher series on location in Hungary. Here’s the breakdown from Netflix on what to expect:

“Based on the best-selling fantasy series, The Witcher is an epic tale of fate and family. Geralt of Rivia, a solitary monster hunter, struggles to find his place in a world where people often prove more wicked than beasts. But when destiny hurtles him toward a powerful sorceress, and a young princess with a dangerous secret, the three must learn to navigate the increasingly volatile Continent together.”

Netflix hasn’t confirmed when The Witcher series will begin streaming on their platform. But with filming underway now, we can hope for a debut at some point late next year.
