What We Do in the Shadows amassed quite the cult following after its debut in 2015. FX took a chance on the property when the network agreed to back Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi’s vision for a series. FX initially greenlit a pilot for the show. They’ve since changed their mind. They’ve now ordered a full 10 episode series. What We Do in the Shadows

FX is hoping to have the show on the air at some point next year. What We Do in the Shadows is a comedy which follows three vampire roommates that have lived together for hundreds of years. The plan is for the series to feature half hour episodes written by Clement and directed by Waititi.

The film in which the show is based earned a modest $6.9 million off of a budget of $1.6 million. The movie starred Taika Waititi, Jemaine Clement and Rhys Darby among others. There’s no word whether Clement and Waititi would be back to star in the show or remain in the shadows.

Nick Grad, president of originals at FX, confirmed the network’s excitement via a statement:

“What We Do in the Shadows only gets better with age thanks to this brilliant adaptation for television by co-creators Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi. Their feature version was a hilarious, fresh take on the mundanity of everyday life that even immortals must face. We are thankful to them, Paul Simms and Scott Rudin, and this amazing cast for taking us deeper into the shadows with this series.”

Waititi looks like he has a few other projects on his slate in addition to his What We Do in the Shadows series. He’s directing the upcoming  Jojo Rabbit which revolves around “a young boy in Hitler’s army [who] finds out his mother is hiding a Jewish boy in their home.” Taika will play the role of “Imaginary Hitler” in the movie. Scarlett Johansson and Sam Rockwell are reportedly attached as well.

He’s also attached to direct the films Bubbles and The Last Family. Jemaine Clement can be seen later this month alongside his comedic partner Bret McKenzie as the duo bring Flight of the Conchords back to HBO for a hour-long comedy special.
