One of the upcoming shows poised to be an exclusive to DC’s upcoming DC Universe subscription platform is Doom Patrol. We haven’t heard much on the project, but casting is currently underway with a recognizable name taking on a lead role – Brendan Fraser.
Deadline is reporting that Fraser has been added to the show’s cast in the role of Robotman. The character, real name Cliff Steel, was a former daredevil and race car driver that found his body destroyed following a wreck in the Indianapolis 500. His brain was then placed into a robotic body, thus creating the cyborg known as Robotman.
Fraser will portray the human Steel in early stages of the series and whenever flashbacks are necessary to the story. However, the actor’s primary role within the series will be to voice Steel following his conversion into his robotic form. Riley Shanahan has been cast to play the physical role of Robotman after Steel’s racing disaster.
DC Universe’s Doom Patrol series is being written by Jeremy Carver and tells the story of a ragtag group of DC heroes. The team comes together with the help of Cyborg, played by Joivan Wade. The Doom Patrol roster consists of the aforementioned Robot Man, Negative Man, Elasti-Woman (to be played by April Bowlby), and Crazy Jane (Diane Guerrero).
Fraser has seen as resurgence of late following a hiatus from the Hollywood spotlight. He’s had roles in the television series Texas Rising, The Affair, Trust and Condor. He’ll also return to film side of things with his upcoming efforts in Behind the Curtain, The Field and The Poison Rose.
Since its announcement, DC hasn’t given us much on Doom Patrol in regards to details. With progress being made on casting, hopefully we’ll get more information on the DC Universe series later this year.
