It’s been four days, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for the Nintendo Switch is the fastest selling game in the franchise’s history. Which is rather impressive after Mario Kart on the Wii has had that crown for a few years now.
Since April 28th, Mario Kart 8 has sold 459,000 as both digital and physical copies on day one alone, which beats the Wii’s Mario Kart number of 433,000. Nintendo states that this means 1 out of every 2 Switch owners bought Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on launch day, basically half of those sold in the US.
After Breath of the Wild, Mario Kart 8 has definitely been next on Switch owner’s list of games to buy. First, every Nintendo systems needs a Mario Kart. Second, it’s way more fun than Snipperclips as a co-op game. It’s very difficult indeed to find a Switch owner that disapproves of the Mario Kart series. It’s easy, as something anyone can learn fairly quickly, and always fun with the clever balance system (Blue Shell) that can make anyone feel like they have a chance at winning.
With Mario Kart already breaking the charts, I do wonder if any other game this year will do the same. Minecraft is coming May 11, Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers will release May 26, ARMS comes on June 16th, and finally Splatoon 2 on July 21st. Out of that list, I would say Splatoon 2 is the most likely to break any chart. Mainly because it too, sells the Switch on the co-op and multiplayer modes. What better way to sell than by sharing the fun with a friend.
