Sony has finally released a trailer for The Dark Tower which reveals a small glimpse into the film. In the trailer, Jake Chambers (played by Tom Taylor, known for Doctor Foster and Legends) tells his psychologist about the visions he has had about Gunslingers and the Tower. The psychologist, of course, tells him they are only dreams. Which is promptly followed by Chambers finding his way into a portal to the Mid-World, where he meets Idris Elba’s character, the Gunslinger. Turns out, Gunslingers don’t exist anymore and the Man in Black (played by Matthew McConaughey) wants to destroy the Tower in order to unleash darkness upon the world. I’m sure there’s more to it than that, but who knows, some villains are just villains.
Indeed, the Gunslinger does say in the trailer that the Man in Black is nothing “like the devil,” instead he is “worse.” On that word, the trailer shows the Man in Black with fire reflected in his eyes and then the chilling quote “you can’t stop what’s coming. Death always wins.” So it begins, Chambers and the Gunslinger’s quest to save Earth, what could possibly go wrong.
The Dark Tower is directed by Nikolaj Arcel, who is known for his work on The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and A Royal Affair. So it seems he has a bit of experience converting book to film. That said, The Dark Tower isn’t actually an adaptation of Stephen King’s eight-book series, it acts as a sequel to the series. In fact, the books are actually centered around the Gunslinger as he discovers the Tower and what it does. Which makes me wonder exactly how the world building is going to happen in the film without looking like a mess of too many details, so hopefully Arcel knows what he’s doing.
The Dark Tower will hit theaters on August 4th, 2017.
