In a financial report for the last fiscal year, Take-Two mentioned the Red Dead Redemption 2 delay, along with a hint that 2K is currently developing a new title for one of their biggest franchises. The upcoming game, according to chairman and CEO of Take-Two Strauss Zelnick, will be leading the charge of releases after April 2018.
Take-Two wants to hit record sales in 2018 with Red Dead Redemption 2 and “a highly anticipated new title from one of 2K’s biggest franchises.” 2K only has so many franchises under its belt, including BioShock, Borderlands, NBA, Civilization, and The Darkness.
Though there are only two of the latter, and last one was released back in 2012. Civilization had a somewhat recent addition to the series, thus a new one seems unlikely. However, it is safe to say that The Darkness and Civilization are not nearly as popular as BioShock, Borderlands, and NBA.
Most gamers are likely laser focused on a BioShock sequel. Personally, I’m not sure where BioShock as a series can go after Infinite and Burial At Sea. The series is well-rounded as it is and the ideas (within the confines of the games’ fiction) have been explored as much as they should be without falling apart. Another BioShock game would require a brand new city, villain, and protagonist; without being a carbon copy of the previous games. This is not an easy task.
Nonetheless, we shall see what Take-Two really means when they say “biggest franchise” sometime in the future before April 2018. Which franchise do you hope gets a sequel? Let us know in the comments below!
