Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets Debuts Final Trailer

Warner Bros. has released the final trailer for Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. It contains some new footage of both beautiful vistas and cute aliens, as well as the shear destruction of the city the main characters must face. As usual, the sentiment is that this movie looks amazing, enough to be as much success as James Cameron’s Avatar. Hopefully, however, with a little more plot than an alien version of colonialism and the noble savage.

This film does have one advantage that Avatar did not, it is based on a series of French comics titled Valérian and Laureline by Pierre Christin. The story focuses on the latter two partners, tasked with saving the City and the universe from a force that will destroy both. Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets will star Dane DeHaan (The Amazing Spider-Man 2) as Valerian and Cara Delevingne (Paper Towns) as Laureline.

The director of the film, Luc Besson, has been pushing to get this comic adapted into film for years. It seems his efforts have finally paid off, and in a rather spectacularly visual way thus far. The scope of this film, judging by the trailers, wants very much to make other worlds, like Star Wars, look small. An enormous feat; we shall see if Besson is successful.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets debuts in theaters July 21st of this year.
