It seems that a release date of August 15th 2017 has been leaked on the Sonic Mania Steam page, though it has since been changed to Summer 2017. It was at the end of the trailer on the page, and we took a picture before it disappeared. This can be seen in the text here to the right. Interestingly, the date was only shown on European Steam pages, and not the American version.
The date, judging by the tried and true number 15 (see God of War release date if you’re sensing a trend) is likely a placeholder even with the immediate change. But you never know, and maybe we should be marking our calendars for the middle of summer.
Nonetheless, Sonic Mania is a reboot of all the classic Sonic games, featuring new stages and levels, but all in the same 8-bit we so fondly remember. The game is supposed to be coming out in compliment to Sonic Forces, a brand new 3D take on the franchise, with more modern gameplay mixed in with the usual side scrolling platformer.
It is not really clear exactly why SEGA is choosing to reboot the old classics, though that isn’t to say it’s not a good thing. There is no platformer out there quite like Sonic and it would be nice to be able to play those levels again without have the hit my SEGA Game Gear to jump start a flickering screen. But there are definitely some SEGA games that should not be rebooted, as our Jeff Scott explains here.
Sonic Mania and Sonic Forces will be coming out in the summer of this year on the PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch.
