Sega has unveiled that there is more to Sonia Mania than just a revamped copy of the older games. The bonus content included in the game will be the bonus stages, time attack mode, and special stages. The bonus stages are also dubbed the Blue Sphere stages, most of which can be seen in the video below.
You can play as Sonic, Tails, or Knuckles in these levels and the object is to collect all of the blue spheres. The catch is that once collected, the blue sphere will turn red and touching a red sphere will end the stage instantly. But if you manage to keep going, the blue spheres will turn into coins for you to collect. Once you are done a bonus stage, you will be awarded Silver Medallions depending on your performance. If you hit a perfect score, you will receive Gold Medallions.
The time attack mode is where you can compete against other players on an online leaderboard. Go for the world record in speed and you might just hit the top. It’s not made clear, but I believe this is going through the normal modes, just with a timer that will be stamped on the leaderboards.
The special stages are much like the Sonic Dash game on the mobile, where you race on a set track in 3D mode. You are to collect as many blue spheres as possible, which will add to your speed meter. Once you’ve collected enough to fill the meter, you can use it for an extra boost and get through the stage even faster. You can fall of the stage, so be careful with your speed boost once you get it.
Sonic Mania will be available August 15, 2017 on the PS4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and PC. You can also pre-order the standard edition, or the collector’s edition which includes a metallic collector’s card, collector’s box, 12″ statue with Sega startup audio, and Sega cartridge cast with a golden ring.
