With Ghost Games and EA’s 2015 Need for Speed reboot, the series successfully went back to its basics. Now with less than a month until launch, the game’s sequel is ready to double down.
Need for Speed Payback looks poised to deliver on some seriously intense racing action. And the game’s story mode looks like an ode to The Fast and the Furious – which is great. Today’s trailer breaks it down at a surface level. You’re in control of three main characters; Tyler “Ty” Morgan, Jessica “Jess” Miller and Sean “Mac” McAlister. Each with their own different in-game styles.
Ty is “the natural-born racer”, and appears to be the lead of the narrative. He has “killer racing instincts and an unwavering will to win.” Jess is a getaway driver for hire. She has the ability to “get you out of trouble no matter how volatile the situation.” And Mac is the team’s drift and off-road specialist. He appears to be the fun and unpredictable one within the story.
These three personalities translate to Need for Speed Payback’s three different in-game settings. Ty will do the street racing. Jess will handle intense getaway segments. And Mac, of course, handles everything off-road.
The House are the villains of the game. They run the underworld of Fortune Valley. But we can gleam little about them within the story trailer so it’s not exactly clear what their motives are. All we know is that they’ve setup our trio of heroes. And with their backs against the wall, Ty, Jess and Mac have no choice but to bring down The House.
All in all, the game looks slick. The action set pieces look intense and the narrative looks like enough to justify stringing together a bunch of racing missions. We’ll soon see for ourselves next month. Need for Speed Payback races to PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on November 10th.
