Octopath Traveler Sequel Confirmed, Prequel Coming to Smartphones
Square Enix made a lot of fans happy today when they confirmed that more Octopath Traveler was on the way. At first, the studio revealed that a prequel was being developed for smartphones in Japan. And later, the publisher announced that an Octopath Traveler sequel was in the works for consoles too.
Although it’s only confirmed for Japan at this point, the Octopath Traveler prequel with feature the same familiar “HD-2D” graphics on a smartphone as the original did on Switch. Entitled Octopath Traveler: Conquerors of the Continent, the mobile game will incorporate a command-based battle system which will include parties of up to eight with swipe controls for input. Here’s the Japanese trailer:
Set within the continent of Osterra, the plot features three conquerors which you as “the chosen one” will go up against to stop. And just as in the original, you’ll get to choose which story to focus on first.
Some fans were vocal on Twitter about their disappointment in the prequel being a mobile game and not a full-fledged title for console. Octopath Traveler’s Japanese Twitter account acknowledged these complaints and confirmed that an Octopath Traveler sequel is indeed in the works.
The quote from their tweet translates to “Everyone waiting for a new game on console, we’re sorry, but production will take a little while longer, so in the meantime, we hope you can enjoy this!”
With the initial game just arriving for Switch in July, we likely won’t be seeing anything on the Octopath Traveler sequel anytime soon. But it is reassuring to know that Square Enix is apparently just as invested in the series as we are by confirming not one, but two additional titles headed our way in the future.
