Mortal Kombat Trilogy Remaster Rumored

When Ed Boon hit the stage at The Game Awards, most of us likely knew what was coming next. And we were proven correct when the director of NetherRealm Games revealed Mortal Kombat 11 to the masses. But there’s rumors that Mortal Kombat 11 isn’t the only game from the series in the works. A potential Mortal Kombat Trilogy remaster may be in development too.

ComicBook.com has published a story based upon information gathered by the YouTuber Doctre81. Doctre81 found a resume posting online from a game designer for Blind Squirrel Games. The studio previously developed the BioShock: The Collection package, and more recently they handled the Sunset Overdrive port for PC.

The resume’s owner cites that they’ve been working on an “unannounced fighting game” that is referred to as a “remaster collection”. They later go on to claim responsibility for the title’s “progression system tying together 3 separate titles into one meta-experience”.

Also noted is that this potential Mortal Kombat Trilogy remaster will feature level design and gameplay scripting through the Unreal 4 engine. This leads us to believe that the Mortal Kombat Trilogy remaster wouldn’t be a mere port of the 1996 classic. Instead, it sounds like the project would be redesigned from the ground up on a new engine, and thus, properly earning the remaster tag.

The information also confirmed that the theorized Mortal Kombat Trilogy remaster would come to PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. No timetable was discussed, but if WB Games and NetherRealm Studios used the Mortal Kombat Trilogy remaster as a preorder bonus for Mortal Kombat 11, you’d have to imagine it would certain help to drive units. And the motif fits with the next Mortal Kombat game looking like it will feature time travel elements within its story.

The Mortal Kombat Trilogy remaster is far from a certainty at this point. But if and when it gets announced, we’ll be sure to let you know.
