Disney’s robust roster of animated films are steadily getting the live-action treatment. The next one up is a reimagining of their 1992 classic, Aladdin. And the House of Mouse was generous enough to drop the first Aladdin trailer for us last night during Thursday Night Football.
The Aladdin trailer opens overlooking a vast and barren desert. The camera then pans and we see 4 riders in the distance, and then Agrabah comes into view. The scene then shifts to night and we get a to see a Iago flying overhead.
We then see the exterior of the infamous Cave of Wonders. Just like in the original, the Cave states that only “the diamond in the rough” may enter. That, of course, is our charming street rat, Aladdin.
More From Nerd Much?:
The camera then takes us inside the Cave of Wonders. It’s absolutely riddled with treasure. But atop a tall rock lies Aladdin’s purpose here – the magic lamp. Disney’s short Aladdin trailer then concludes with Aladdin reaching out to grab the mythical device.
Guy Ritchie is directing the upcoming live-action adaptation based upon a script written by he and John August. We get to see Mena Massoud in the Aladdin trailer as the titular character. We’ll later get to see Naomi Scott as Princess Jasmine and Marwan Kenzari as the villainous Jafar. Disney landed Will Smith to play the iconic role of the Genie in the film.
There were initially reports that the core animal characters of Abu the monkey, Iago the parrot and Rajah the tiger wouldn’t be carried over into the live-action Aladdin remake. Those were later refuted, and again, we get a glimpse of Iago in the recently released footage. There’s still no word on whether Iago will speak in next year’s movie though. The 1992 animated Aladdin cast Gilbert Gottfried as the parrot’s voice.
Additional details should be coming out relatively soon. Disney’s Aladdin hits theaters May 24th.
