20th Century Fox has released the first official trailer for 2017’s War for the Planet of the Apes. Andy Serkis (LOTR’s Gollum and all-around CGI actor extraordinaire) returns as Caesar and Woody Harrelson (Zombieland, No Country for Old Men) will be playing the film’s main villain, a military leader who wants to exterminate all the apes before Earth “becomes a planet of apes.”
The only problem is this is a prequel; we already know Earth becomes a planet of apes! How can you set up stakes in the trailer and have Woody so seriously talk about “if we lose” when we already know the outcome? Either way, I’m still going to go see it in theaters the day it comes out. I absolutely loved Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.
I am a tad nervous this one might shy away from some of the emotional aspects that made me invested in this new trilogy in the first place. Rise drew me in hard and fast, it made me feel sympathy for both Caesar and his human family. Then Dawn came and had more action, but was still great. Many argue Dawn is better. Let’s just hope War is less Expendables 3 and more Saving Private Ryan… but with apes.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves is back to helm the project again, but this time he has written the screenplay as well. Reeves also wrote the Let Me In remake and directed 2008’s Cloverfield, so this choice seems pretty promising. I should also mention that War of the Planet of the Apes is on our Must-See Movies in 2017 list, so everybody here is pretty excited for this one.
Aside from Serkis and Harrelson who appear in the trailer, War of the Planet of the Apes will star Judy Greer (Archer, Ant-Man) and Steve Zahn (Sahara, Saving Silverman) as humans and Ty Olsson (Twilight Series, X-men 2) and Max Lloyd-Jones (iZombie, Switched at Birth) as apes in Caesar’s army.
You can see all of these humans battle the apes this Summer as War of the Planet of the Apes is set to be released July 14, 2017. I know I’m excited, what about you? Let us know if the comments below!
