PS4 Pro Announced: Release Date, Price, and More

Starting off the event was the official reveal of the new, slimmer PS4 model. Sony announced that this “slimmer, lighter,more energy efficient” model will be replacing the existing PS4 models starting September 15, 2016. This slimmer model will be priced at $299.

The real star of the show was when the PS4 Pro (formerly PS4K and PS4 Neo). According to lead system architect Mark Cerny, Sony has “more than doubled the power” of the PS4 Pro’s GPU while simultaneously increasing the clock speed of its CPU.  For previous games, there will be “a number of mechanisms” built in to transferring them to the new model. Exact specs have not yet been released, but we do know that it will include a 1TB hard drive to get you started. Gamers with a 4K, HDR enabled television can enjoy the added benefits on November 10, 2016 for $399. With the release date being so close, we can expect much more information soon.

If you don’t plan on making an upgrade, you’ll be pleased to know that you can still take advantage of Sony’s new push for HDR. High-dynamic-range television allow for many more colors to be presented in their purest state. Many agree that this is an even bigger improvement than the jump to 4K alone. If you have one of these televisions, Sony has announced that a new update is coming to all PS4 models next week to make them HDR capable.
