Pennyworth Gotham Prequel Series Production Begins this Year

With Fox’s Gotham coming to a close later this year, a new show featuring one of Gotham’s most popular players appears to be emerging from the shadows. The Pennyworth Gotham prequel series is slated to begin filming later this year.

The show was ordered by the network Epix back in May. The network confirmed today that the first season of the Pennyworth Gotham prequel series will consist of 10 episodes and will begin filming in London as of November 21st. Production is expected to last 7 months with the season wrapping around June.

The series is poised around – you guessed it – Alfred Pennyworth. The era is 1960s London and Alfred has recently concluded his time within the British Special Air Service. Thomas Wayne will also serve a prominent role in the series as one of Pennyworth’s closest friends.

Bruno Heller, showrunner of Gotham, will helm Epix’s spin-off as well. He’ll be joined on the Pennyworth Gotham prequel series by his new co-executive producer, Danny Cannon. When the pieces for the show began falling into place, Epix president Mike Wright declared his excitement for the Gotham spin-off coming to the network:

“As genuine fans of these classic DC characters, as well as the incredibly talented Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon, we couldn’t be more excited to make Epix the home of this series. We can’t wait to work with Bruno and Danny on this fantastic origin story.”

Heller and Cannon released a joint statement saying the following:

“Michael and his colleagues have created the perfect venue for original storytelling, and all of us working on Pennyworth are thrilled to be on the Epix slate.”

With the show expecting to wrap up filming in June, fans can likely expect the Pennyworth Gotham prequel series to debut on Epix around fall of 2019.
