FX has announced that they’ve given 14th-century set drama The Bastard Executioner a full series order.
The series is described as a 10-episode period piece that “tells the story of a warrior knight in King Edward I’s charge who is broken by the ravages of war and vows to lay down his sword. But when that violence finds him again he is forced to pick up the bloodiest sword of all.”
The Bastard Executioner cast includes Stephen Moyer (True Blood), Katey Sagal (Sons of Anarchy, Married with Children), Matthew Rhys (The Americans), Timothy V. Murphy, and newcomer Lee Jones. The series is written by Kurt Sutter of Sons of Anarchy fame.
The new series has the makings of a great TV series, and is the first of its kind for the FX network. It sounds like a great hour adventure romp set in the 1300s, and we’ll be interested to learn if the show will take place solely in England (where King Edward I reigned). Of course, a historical fiction drama TV series set in the time period in England has the potential for cool sword fights, medieval castles and a grizzly, stark reality.
The Bastard Executioner is currently scheduled to premiere this fall.
