We tried to stay away from the sci-fi horror stuff because that’s a rabbit hole we didn’t want to go down in this post (and it also deserves its own list in the future). But, we thought a handy sci-fi movie release calendar would be great (we were right).

Discover what new science fiction films are coming this year and next year in the list below.

Here are all of the best upcoming sci-fi movies of 2019 and 2020 to look forward to:

Sci-fi Movies 2019

1 Replicas

Release Date: January 11, 2019
Starring: Keanu Reeves, Alice Eve
Director: Jeffrey Nachmanoff

Keanu Reeves is definitely seeing a resurgence in popularity following his latest string of movies, which includes 47 RoninJohn Wick (which we included on our list of the top 50 most underrated action movies of all-time), and Knock KnockReplicas is just one of Keanu’s seven upcoming projects, and it looks to have a lot of promise. The movie will follow a scientist who becomes obsessed with bringing back his dead family members following a tragic traffic accident. The film is being directed by Tanya Wexler with a story written by Stephen Hamel (who just so happened to help produce John Wick).

2 Captive State

Captive State

Release Date: March 29, 2019
Starring: John Goodman, Vera Farmiga, Machine Gun Kelly, Madeline Brewer
Director: Rupert Wyatt

If the still of John Goodman in a mask in some sort of submersible shown above doesn’t pique your interest, I’m not sure what would. Captive State is an upcoming Chicago-set sci-fi movie that’s set 10 years after an alien force has taken things over. It’ll explore the lives of both sides of the conflict.

You can watch the trailer here.

3 I Am Mother

I Am Mother

Release Date: June 7, 2019
Starring: Hilary Swank, Luke Hawker, Clara Rugaard
Director: Grant Sputore

A robot mother who raises a teenage girl following an extinction event in an attempt to repopulate the earth is interrupted by a stranger with alarming news.

4 Men in Black: International

Men in Black: International

Release Date: June 14, 2019
Starring: Tessa Thompson, Chris Hemsworth
Director: F. Gary Gray

Men in Black spin-off movie titled Men In Black: International will hit in 2019, and it’s said to expand the world of MiB in the same way that Jurassic World expanded that franchise. Before you ask, no, Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones aren’t expected to reprise their roles. Wouldn’t be surprised to see an uncredited cameo or two, though.

Instead, the film will be led by Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson, who will track down a mole in the MiB organization.

5 Ad Astra

Ad Astra

Release Date: September 20, 2019
Starring: Brad Pitt, Donald Sutherland, Tommy Lee Jones, Ruth Negga
Director: James Grey
Watch the Trailer Here.

Ad Astra will follow an Army Corps engineer on the search across the galaxy to find his father, who disappeared 20 years ago while on a mission to find alien life.

6 Gemini Man

Gemini Man

Release Date: October 11, 2019
Starring: Will Smith, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Clive Owen
Director: Ang Lee

I wonder if we’ll ever be sick of seeing Will Smith sci-fi flicks? In our expert opinion, probably not, and Gemini Man sounds incredibly promising. Not only will it star Smith, who will play the role of an older hitman who has to face-off against a younger clone of himself, but VFX will allow him to play the role of his younger self as well. Cool.

It looks absolutely brilliant.

7 Terminator: Dark Fate

Terminator: Dark Fate

Release Date: November 1, 2019
Starring: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton
Director: Tim Miller
Check out the Terminator: Dark Fate Comic-Con Featurette here.

Deadpool‘s Tim Miller will direct the upcoming Terminator Reboot that will see the return of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton, as well as James Cameron. Undoubtedly, we should expect this to be a passing of the reigns to a new generation so that Hollywood can continue making Terminator movies. Still, it’s going to be a huge big budget sci-fi film for summer 2019.

8 Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (Episode 9)

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (Episode 9)

Release Date: December 20, 2019
Starring: Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac

The Rise of Skywalker will be the epic conclusion to the new Star Wars trilogy, and we’re absolutely here for it.

Starring: Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Elisabeth Moss, Aldis Hodge, Storm Reid
Director: Leigh Whannell

The Invisible Man, based on the H.G. Wells novel and Universal Pictures’ classic monster characters, is apparently in development limbo. Not only did Universal’s new Dark Universe films not do well, which is one reason to shelve it, but also it has Johnny Depp’s name attached to it, which hasn’t gone over well lately.

10 Godzilla vs. Kong

Release Date: March 13, 2020

18 Obi-Wan Kenobi Movie (Unconfirmed)

Release Date: Rumored 2020 But TBA
Starring: TBA
Director: TBA

A standalone Obi-Wan Kenobi film will begin filming in January 2019, according to The Independent. We’ll update as we get more details, but this was also previously rumored by THR.

Rumor has it now, however, that these anthology films have been put on hold due to A Solo Story‘s less than stellar reception.

19 Machete Kills Again in Space

Machete Kills Again in Space

Release Date: TBA

I, Robot 2

Director: TBA

23 The Six Billion Dollar Man

The Six Billion Dollar Man

Release Date: TBA
Starring: Mark Wahlberg

We can rebuild him. We have the technology. The film will star Mark Wahlberg as Steve Austin, a military officer who becomes part of a top-secret government program after a near-fatal accident. Using cutting-edge technology, he’s turned into the world’s first truly bionic man: better, stronger, faster. It’s based on the TV series of the same name. While we’re not much a fan of Mark Wahlberg, we realize we’re in the minority, and sci-fi lovers are going to be looking forward to this movie.

24 Inversion

Release Date: TBA
Starring: Caiyu Yang
Director: Mark Waters

What happens when Earth gradually loses her gravity? A Chinese scientist (Caiyu Yang) and an American street-man try to stop the chaos. More to come as news comes in.

25 The Blob

The Blob

Release Date: TBA
Starring: Samuel L. Jackson

Of course, we all remember the original The Blob movie, and then the new iteration in 1988. Now, The Blob will get a third Hollywood redux. This time, hopefully, it won’t look like a ball of cherry Jello. The movie will be directed by Simon West (Con AirLara Croft: Tomb Raider), with Samuel L. Jackson attached to star. Is it possible to make such a ridiculous concept relevant to today’s horror sci-fi audience?

A live-action Robotech movie is in the works, and originally was set to star Leonardo DiCaprio. He probably won’t star in the lead role now that the movie has actually been greenlit, but we don’t know for sure just yet. Hopefully, we’ll get some Robotech casting news soon.

29 Space Invaders

Release Date: TBA
Starring: TBA

We’re not so sure that a Space Invaders movie is such a good idea, especially since the game didn’t have any backstory or lore to it. And, given the failure of the most recent video game movie, Pixels, the studio might want to hold off on rushing this out. Still, it’s in the works.

30 Untitled Sci-Fi Courtroom Drama

Release Date: TBA
Starring: TBA
Director: Darren Aronofsky

Details are super scarce for this project, but back in July 2017 The Tracking Board reported that director Darren Aronofsky will direct a courtroom drama revolving around artificial intelligence.

31 Only You

Release Date: TBA

The Division Movie

Release Date: TBA

While obviously not originally a video game, calling the upcoming The Division movie anything but a video game movie would be wrong. Without Ubisoft’s The Divisionthere wouldn’t be a movie. It’s based on the works of Tom Clancy, and it follows the battle to take back NYC.

36 Stargate

Upcoming Superhero Movies

The superhero genre is as popular as ever, and with the recent release of Logan — which many have called the best Wolverine movie to date — it’s clear that the genre isn’t going anywhere. The subgenre has a rabid fanbase, and the films have mass appeal, which means potential for box office domination. Here are all of the upcoming superhero movies that we know about right now, and we’ll update accordingly.

60 The Batman

The Batman

Release Date: TBA
Director: Who knows at this point.
Cast: Robert Patinson

The Batman is certainly going through the early stages of development hell right now. First, Ben Affleck dropped out as director, then there were rumors of him wanting to drop out as Batman entirely, then Matt Reeves was director, wasn’t director, and then became director again. The latest? The Batman is going through an entire rewrite from scratch, meaning Reeves won’t be getting someone’s sloppy seconds.

We’re certainly okay with Warner Bros. taking their time this time around, so here’s to hoping that The Batman turns out great. For now, just know that it’s one of the most anticipated superhero movies of 2019.

61 Nightwing

Release Date: TBA
Director: TBA
Cast: TBA

62 Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

Release Date: TBA
Director: TBA
Cast: TBA

All we have at this point for the third Guardians of the Galaxy movie is that it has been officially confirmed by director James Gunn. We assume he’s going to take the reins for it as well, but that hasn’t been confirmed yet. Still, know that Guardians 3 is on the way at some point in the future.

63 Suicide Squad 2

Release Date: TBA
Director: TBA
Cast: TBA

The only thing we know about the Suicide Squad sequel at this point is that it’s on the way, and that Adam Cozad will write it.

Somehow, someway, Suicide Squad 2 is happening. Here’s to hoping it’s a bit better than the original.
