Upcoming Star Wars Movies: Calendar of Release Dates

From a galaxy far, far away.

With the theatrical release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens now in our rear view mirrors (not before setting box office records), it’s time to take a look at the road ahead. I don’t know about you, but I was ready to sit and watch Star Wars: Episode VIII right after the credits started rolling — I didn’t want to get up from my seat.

There have been plenty of Star Wars rumors and speculation about new movies on the way, but we’re going to stick to fact for now (okay, and probably some speculation at the end). As it stands right now, there are six confirmed upcoming Star Wars movies with actual release dates or windows, including Episodes 8 and 9, and two confirmed Star Wars anthology films.

So without further ado, here are all of the upcoming Star Wars films that we currently know about in a handy, dandy release dates calendar:

**Note: This will be a running list of dynamic content. As we get news, release dates/changes, and more information, we’ll update accordingly. So, you know, bookmark away! You can also stay tuned to our Star Wars hub for all things related to the universe.

**Update 10/17/17: The Han Solo anthology film has an official name (read below).

1. Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Star Wars Episode 8 title

Release Date: May 26, 2017 December 15, 2017
Cast: Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Oscar Isaac, John Boyega, Andy Serkis
Director: Rian Johnson

We were left with a whirlwind of emotions after seeing The Force Awakens. Is it Rey Solo or Rey Skywalker? Who exactly is Supreme Leader Snoke? Who knows for sure. The next film in the trilogy, Episode VIII (which we now know that it’s officially titled Star Wars: The Last Jedi), will hopefully answer some of these questions. Instead of J.J. Abrams behind the camera, it’ll be Rian Johnson (LooperBreaking Bad). We don’t have any Episode 8 plot details just yet, but we expect that the film will jump forward in time just a bit (as was the case with the original trilogy). Principal photography is set to start this month, and we’ll hopefully get some more details soon.

**Update 1/23/17: We now know that the official Episode 8 title is Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
**Update 9/1/17: Porgs have been introduced, as well as BB-9E (the evil BB-8).

2. Solo: A Star Wars Story

Release Date: May 25, 2018
Cast: Michael K Williams, Emilia Clarke, Alden Enrenreich, Donald Glover
Director: Phil Lord and Chris Miller Director TBD, but we know that Phil Lord and Chris Miller were given the boot for creative differences.

Update 10/17/17: We’ve just received word that the official name of the new Han Solo anthology film is Solo: A Star Wars Story.

The Star Wars Anthology: Han Solo film got its directors, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, back in July 2015. Since then, the only real news we’ve received about the upcoming Star Wars movie is the fact that it’ll star a younger Han Solo. Of course, it’s annoying to even think about recasting one of the most iconic roles in the Star Wars universe for a younger version, but hopefully they’ll be able to get it right. According to Kathleen Kennedy, the new Han Solo movie will focus on a Han that is in the high teens, early 20s. The story will focus on how young Han become the smuggler, thief, and scoundrel that we’re introduced to when Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi first encounter him at the cantina at Mos Eisley.

Rising cinematographer Bradford Young (Selma, Arrival) has been added to the project, which will begin shooting in January 2017. And we now know that Han Solo film has quite an impressive cast, including the likes of Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke, Alden Ehrenreich (as Han), Donald Glover (Lando Calrissian), and Woody Harrelson.

We also know that the spin-off movie will have Jabba the Hutt.

3. Star Wars: Episode IX

upcoming star wars films

Release Date: May 24, 2019 December 20, 2019
Starring: TBA
Director: Colin Trevorrow J.J. Abrams

Of course, we have little to virtually no details regarding Star Wars: Episode 9. It was originally going to be directed by Colin Trevorrow (Jurassic World) and written by Rian Johnson, but now, J.J. Abrams will take the reins on both fronts (writing and directing). There are also reports that Daisy Ridley will reprise her role as Rey in both Episodes 8 and 9, although that has yet to be confirmed by Lucasfilm (and it likely won’t be).

4. Untitled Star Wars Movie 2020

Release Date: TBA 2020
Starring: TBA
Director: TBA

In September 2016, Disney CEO Bob Iger mentioned in an interview with Deadline that he’s heard the pitch for Star Wars Episode IX AND they’ve hired a writer for the previously unannounced Star Wars 2020 movie. Given the current slate of upcoming Star Wars films, it’s probable that this will be another off-shoot film that doesn’t follow the timeline of the main films. It’s unclear whether or not this 2020 movie will be the rumored Boba Fett anthology film (below), so for now, we’ll keep them separate.

5. Star Wars Anthology: Boba Fett (Untitled Boba Fett Movie)

Boba fett

Release Date: Rumored 2020
Starring: TBA
Director: Previously Josh Trank, but he’s no longer involved.

The Star Wars Anthology: Boba Fett movie will tell the origin story of “fan-favorite” bounty hunter, Boba Fett. The Mandalorian warrior will get his own film, and it’s possible that we’ll learn how he became the notorious bounty hunter.

6. Star Wars : Obi-Wan Kenobi Film

star wars movie calendar

Release Date: TBA
Starring: TBA
Director: Tentatively Stephen Daldry

We don’t know much about the Obi-Wan Kenobi Film, but we know it’s on the way, and Stephen Daldry is circling the director’s chair. We’ll update with more as soon as we hear some news, but for now, we thought it would be worth adding it to the Star Wars release date calendar.

Star Wars Rumors

-There are talks about Michael B. Jordan potentially playing the role of Boba Fett. (via SlashFilm)

-It’s being rumored that the Rogue One: A Star Wars Story trailer will be attached to Captain America: Civil War, according to Star Wars Times, but we don’t believe that there’s an ounce of truth that as of right now. We have, however, been wrong before in our lives, so excuse the skepticism.
