All Upcoming Star Wars Movies: The Complete List (Updated!)

With the theatrical release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi now in our rearview mirrors (not before setting box office records), it’s time to take a look at the road ahead. I don’t know about you, but I was ready to sit and watch Star Wars: Episode IV right after the credits started rolling — I didn’t want to get up from my seat.

There have been plenty of Star Wars rumors and speculation about new movies on the way, but we’re going to stick to the facts for now (okay, and probably some speculation at the end). As it stands right now, there are only EIGHT confirmed upcoming Star Wars movies with actual release dates or windows, including Episode 9, two confirmed Star Wars anthology films, and more.

Here are all of the upcoming Star Wars films that we currently know about in a handy, dandy release dates calendar:

**Note: This will be a running list of dynamic content. As we get news, release dates/changes, and more information, we’ll update accordingly. So, you know, bookmark away! You can also stay tuned to our Star Wars hub for all things related to the universe.

Star Wars: Episode IX (The Rise of Skywalker)

Release Date: December 20, 2019
Starring: Daisy Ridley, Oscar Isaac, Billie Lourd
Director: J.J. Abrams

Of course, we have little to virtually no details regarding Star Wars: Episode 9. It was originally going to be directed by Colin Trevorrow (Jurassic World) and written by Rian Johnson, but now, J.J. Abrams will take the reins on both fronts (writing and directing). It’s the conclusion to the latest trilogy, of course.

Now that the debut trailer has been revealed, and there was a panel at this year’s Star Wars Celebration as usual, we do have quite a bit more information now. We now know that the film will take place after the events of Episode 8 after some time has passed — how much time, we don’t yet know. Secondly, we were introduced to a few brand new characters, including Dio, BB-8’s new droid buddy, and Jana – who is rumored to be Lando’s daughter (although she refused to answer the question on stage).

Star Wars Taking a Break After Episode 9

It became evident with the release of Solo that Star Wars movies were not invincible. The movie wasn’t a flop by any means, but it certainly didn’t live up to the financial (or critical) expectations that come attached to a film set within a galaxy far, far away. And for that reason, it was reported that Disney would be backing down on Star Wars flicks. And yesterday, the company’s CEO, Bob Iger, confirmed it.

Following the blowout of Disney+ news that dropped yesterday, Iger spoke with Bloomberg about the company’s big streaming endeavor. And within that conversation, the topic of Star Wars overexposure came up.

Iger confirmed that while there are, of course, more Star Wars feature films coming, the franchise would be slowing down their theatrical presence. In referencing post-Star Wars: Episode 9, Iger commented “We have not announced any specific plans for movies thereafter. There are movies in development, but we have not announced them.”

Disney’s CEO then went on to elaborate, indicating the company would give the series time to breath, and hopefully avoid fan fatigue. “We will take a pause, some time, and reset, because the Skywalker saga comes to an end with this ninth movie. There will be other Star Wars movies, but there will be a bit of a hiatus.”

After Episode 9, there are two separate series of Star Wars films on the one. One series will be helmed by The Last Jedi director, Rian Johnson.

New Star Wars Trilogy

Release Dates: Starting 2022
Starring: TBA
Director: Rian Johnson

Of course, it was recently announced that The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson will write and direct at least the first installment of a new Star Wars Trilogy following Episode IX, although, obviously, details are scarce (and likely will be for some time). It’s still in the conceptual phases, according to Johnson, himself. But we do know that the new series will be “Separate from the episodic Skywalker saga”, as Lucasfilm noted, and that it will feature characters that have yet to be introduced in any of the other films to date.

A Star Wars Movie From Kevin Feige (That’s Not The Title, Though)

kevin feige

Release Dates: TBA
Starring: TBA
Director: Kevin Feige

Mr. Marvel aka Kevin Feige has a new Star Wars movie in the works, which was announced at the end of September 2019 via THR. Interestingly, THR noted that it could lead to Feige having a much larger role within Lucasfilm, and when you factor in the exit of the Game of Thrones duo for their planned Star Wars trilogy, we’re thinking we could see Feige slotted in their spot. Of course, that’s just speculation and possibility, which makes even more sense when you add the box office draw of Feige’s films.

New Star Wars Movie Series From Game of Thrones Showrunners (The Duo Has Left the Building!)

Star Wars series of films coming from David Benioff and D.B. Weiss

Release Dates: TBA
Directors: David Benioff and D.B. Weiss (Game of Thrones)

We don’t know much about this upcoming Star Wars movie series from the showrunners behind Game of Thronesbut the news was announced directly from Starwars.com. One thing we do know is that it’ll be a series, so there’s at least two (and likely three if we go by the history of Star Wars movies). Here’s to hoping we learn more about these soon.

Update 10/28/19: It looks like the Game of Thrones duo has exited their Star Wars trilogy that was originally expected to launch in 2022. Apparently, they’re claiming that their schedule is too full due to their deal with Netflix.

So, now, where do we go from here? What does this mean for the planned trilogy that was slated to begin in 2022? What other big-name directors should we expect to replace Benioff and Weiss? Hopefully, we’ll have more information soon.

CANCELLED…sort of: Star Wars : Obi-Wan Kenobi Film

What was originally rumored as an upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi movie actually became the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi TV series coming to Disney+.

CANCELLED: Star Wars Anthology: Boba Fett (Untitled Boba Fett Movie)

Boba fett

Release Date: Rumored 2020
Starring: TBA
Director: Previously Josh Trank, but he’s no longer involved. Now it’s apparently James Mangold of Logan fame.

The Star Wars Anthology: Boba Fett movie will tell the origin story of “fan-favorite” bounty hunter, Boba Fett. The Mandalorian warrior will get his own film, and it’s possible that we’ll learn how he became the notorious bounty hunter.

Update 5/24/18: It appears as though James Mangold, the director of Logan, will be directing the Boba Fett standalone film (according to THR).

Update 6/20/18: It looks like the less-than-enthusiastic reception to Solo: A Star Wars Story has led to the other two spin-offs, Boba Fett and Obi-Wan, to be put on hold at Lucasfilm. This move had been expected since we saw the reviews and luke-warm reception for the latest Star Wars film, so it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise. Instead, LucasFilm will now be focusing all of their attention on Episode IX and the next trilogy of Star Wars films from director Rian Johnson. [via Collider]

6/21/18: Lucasfilm refuted the report, and are saying they’re still on. Who knows at this point.

10/26/18: Kathleen Kennedy has stated that the Boba Fett movie has been cancelled.
