An Alan Wake TV series has just been announced courtesy of Contradiction Films and Remedy Entertainment. It’s seemingly an easy project to adapt seeing as how Alan Wake was essentially a television series in video game form.

Which is essentially what Tomas Harlan of Contradiction Films stated to Variety earlier today. “Alan Wake was basically a TV series that was put into a game,” he said. “That was Sam’s vision. It was influenced by The Twilight Zone, Secret Window, Hitchcock, Northern Exposure, a lot of U.S. television.

Sam Lake, creator of Alan Wake over at Remedy Entertainment, is listed as an executive producer on the series. Harlan stated that they “plan to work closely with Sam on this show. Sam is a huge part of this. This is his baby.”

Peter Calloway has signed on showrunner for the Alan Wake TV series. His previous efforts have brought us Cloak and Dagger and Legion. Harlan stated that their plan was for Calloway to flesh out the project before Contradiction and Remedy attempt to shop the property in October.

The Alan Wake TV series is based upon the 2010 video game of the same name. Wake is a bestselling author residing within a small town in Washington state. Suffering an extended writer’s block, the author begins to experience a phenomenon that brings the horrors of his previous novel’s narrative to life. Outside of the nightmare he’s found himself experiencing, Wake doesn’t recall ever writing them.

There was a spin-off to the game in Alan Wake’s American Nightmare. But although teased by Lake and his studio, a proper sequel never materialized. But the story wasn’t the problem according to Lake:

“Definitely what we have mapped out is a longer thing than the first game and a sequel; there is more to it. In many ways, we see the universe as a bigger thing. Alan Wake is a very central character, but we have other characters around him like [friend and agent Barry Wheeler] and his wife Alice and Sheriff Sarah Breaker and other characters there. We feel this is a big universe to develop and explore in many ways.”

He continued to elaborate on what the show would focus on as well as how the unmade sequel will play a role:

“The story of the original game is our starting point, the seed which will grow into the bigger story we’re exploring in the show. We’ll be expanding the lore of this crazy and dark universe and diving deeper into certain aspects of it than the game ever did. That includes tapping into some of the story planned for that unreleased second game.

Not only that, but through the years we’ve worked on multiple game concepts and stories for Alan Wake’s world that have never seen the light of day. All of this material will function as potential source material for the show.”

Remedy certainly has the expertise to help bring something like an Alan Wake TV series to fruition. As previously mentioned, the Alan Wake game was very episodic in nature. And then following that the studio created Quantum Break which literally incorporated live action television episodes into a video game. It’ll be some time before we see how it all pans out, but right people are involved to certainly make something special.
