While Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds continues to dominate the gaming culture, others are left wondering how to keep up. And as the saying goes, if you can’t beat them – join them.
Epic Games announced today a Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds inspired Battle Royale mode for their sandbox survival game, Fortnite. Donald Mustard, Worldwide Creative Director at Epic Games, directly cited Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds and H1Z1 as inspirations. It’s available now for testing and Epic Games encourages you to login and give it a shot.
“Battle Royale. 100 players. One giant map. A battle bus. Fortnite building skills combined with intense PvP combat. The last player standing wins,” Mustard touts. Epic’s Unreal Tournament team began toying with the new mode a few months ago while the core Fortnite team focused on the game proper. “The new Battle Royale mode was so much fun we decided to share it with everyone to get feedback,” Mustard said. The official release date for Fortnite‘s Battle Royale will be September 26th.
Epic is promising ongoing support for their Battle Royale offering. Promising that “this is just the first version of the mode, and we will update Battle Royale and the core Fortnite game throughout Early Access and into launch.” Epic is also running a sale for Fortnite to piggyback off of today’s reveal. You can now pickup the Standard or Deluxe Edition of the Founder’s Packs for 25% off. The deal runs from September 12th through September 18th.
A new trailer for the game was released today so we can all get a glimpse of what’s to come. It certainly looks to have its DNA heavily based on PUBG formula. But Epic kept the building mechanics found within Fortnite as part of the mode to give this a unique twist that Fortnite regulars will find familiar.
