After nothing more than a cryptic unveiling, we finally have some fresh details on one of the upcoming Harry Potter mobile titles. Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery will be a personalized mobile RPG that throws you into a life at Hogwarts. And it’s coming this spring.
The game puts you into the role of your own personalized student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The game’s timeline is set before Harry Potter himself attends the school. However, you will see other familiar faces on the grounds. Specifically mentioned were Nymphadora Tonks and Bill Weasley as current students in the game’s canon.
You’ll do what typical Hogwarts students do. You’ll have your own magical pet and be selected to one of the four iconic houses. And you’ll learn new skills as you progress through the school’s various curriculums – taught by the same professors as the story’s place in time would suggest. As your skills and experience evolve as a student, you’ll unlock more abilities and locations to explore in-game.
Chris DeWolfe, co-founder and CEO of Jam City, briefly shed light on the upcoming app:
“Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery is a role playing experience about magic, friendship, and life as a student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. We can’t wait to give fans a first look at the game at A Celebration of Harry Potter, and this spring players will be able to explore Hogwarts fully in their journey toward becoming a witch or wizard.”
DeWolfe and his team at Jam City promise that Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery will feature a compelling story. The game will be comprised of “both large plot arcs and smaller stories such as relationship quests.”
The title will also follow the DNA of many other narrative driven games. Hogwarts Mystery has “a new encounter system in which player’s decisions in both actions and narrative impact their quests, and how other characters regard and interact with them.”
Jam City plans to do a full unveiling of the game during the Celebration of Harry Potter event at Universal Studios in Orlando from January 26th through January 28th. The developers will host a panel detailing the game with behind the scenes information, and show it off in playable form as well.
