My Nintendo Gold Points to Discount Games on Switch

For nearly a year now, fans have been wondering what the hell they were supposed to be doing with their My Nintendo Gold Points that they’ve accrued since the launch of the Nintendo Switch. Set to expire next month, they do nothing for the console and are just sitting there. Now we know how they’ll be put to good use.My Nintendo Gold Points can be put towards Switch eShop discounts beginning in March.

Beginning in early March, Nintendo will allow your saved Gold Points to go towards discounts on Nintendo eShop titles for the Nintendo Switch – as well as Wii U and Nintendo 3DS. You can use the Gold Points towards DLC pack discounts as well.

Buying a digital or physical game for Switch, Wii U or 3DS will earn you those precious Gold coins. Gold Points are accrued at 5% of the amount you pay, not including any points or discounts you may have used during the transaction.

Gold Points have a shelf life of one year. So anything you purchased in March during the Switch’s launch will expire on April 1st, 2018.

Up until today’s news, your prior option was to utilize your Gold Points towards select game discounts on Nintendo Wii U and 3DS systems. These were only the deals that Nintendo themselves curated and options were/are slim. For instance, today’s offerings include a 30% discount on Dragon Quest VII for 3DS (90 Gold Points). A 50% discount on Earthbound for New Nintendo 3DS and Wii U (40 Gold Points). And 30% off the Pokémon Trading Card Game on 3DS (20 Gold Points).

You can also purchase two games outright for Gold Points today. Might Switch Force! On 3DS for 50 Gold Points. And for another 50 Gold Points you could purchase Siesta Fiesta on 3DS.

This seems to be a great gesture from Nintendo to reward its loyal fan base. We’ll have to see how well it works once it rolls out next month. If you haven’t signed up for a My Nintendo account yet, you’ve got nothing to lose. Head to the website here to register and start grabbing those precious coins. It will only help some you some loot down the line.
