According to James Cameron’s Avatar official Facebook page, all four upcoming sequels now have the release dates of December 18, 2020, December 17, 2021, December 20, 2024 and December 19, 2025. They are beginning concurrent production on the films now and are looking forward to continuing the series.
No one else is, however, as the world does not need four Avatar sequels to contribute to the arts and culture of the USA. Though I will say the films have one thing going for them: the splendor of combining film and computer generated technology.
If nothing else, we can all admit the Avatar from 2009 showed us a beautiful almost completely computer generated world. The graphics even hold up to today, if you ever find the energy to watch it again.
James Cameron made it clear that he wants to top the 2009 Avatar. He stated back during that film’s debut that he wanted to wait until technology reached the point where he could build the world he wanted properly. So if nothing else, we’re going to get some wicked eyecandy. Be that in the form hot alien ladies or a grand and sprawling fantasy world.
Though if four sequels are really necessary remains to be seen. I don’t mind two hours of gorgeous visuals as much as the next person, but there is a point where I imagine Cameron will run out of innovative ideas. There will be significant dull sections for a plot we could care less about, I guarantee it.
