Jake Gyllenhaal to Play Mysterio in Spider-Man Homecoming Sequel

Well, it looks as though the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man franchise is poised to nail another big time actor as its villain. Jake Gyllenhaal is reportedly in talks to join the sequel and take on the iconic role of Mysterio.Gyllenhaal

Mysterio, real name Quentin Beck, was a special effects technician and stunt man in Hollywood. Realizing he was stuck in dead end job, Beck attempted to convert himself into an actor. It didn’t go well. He then realized he could use his special effects for nefarious means, and thus, Mysterio was born.

Mysterio was planned to be a villain in the fourth Tobey Maguire Spider-Man film. Bruce Campbell had made cameos in each of the three Spider-Man movies prior. And it was planned to be revealed that Campbell was actually Mysterio all along.

Gyllenhaal too had a brief flirtation with the Spider-Man series. Tobey Maguire filmed Seabiscuit between the filming of Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2. He suffered a back injured during the shoot which threatened the actor’s ability to reprise his role as Peter Parker and Spider-Man. Gyllenhaal was considered to take over the role if Maguire had not been able to continue.

It’s also been confirmed that Michael Keaton will return to the series in the role of Adrian Toomes/Vulture. It’s unclear how big of role Keaton will play considering his character’s incarceration. But with Vulture, Shocker, Scorpion and now Mysterio being in play, we’re getting pretty close to a possible assembly of a Sinister Six. The villainous team could easily be the primary foil for the inevitable MCU Spider-Man 3.

The Spider-Man Homecoming Sequel is slated to hit theaters on July 5th, 2019. Jon Watts will return to direct. With a release of just over a year out, one would image that Marvel and Sony are about ready to get the project in front of cameras.
