20th Century Fox has announced that production has begun on its first film under the umbrella of Disney. The studio’s Free Guy video game movie has begun filming. A project that sports a fun premise and an impressive cast.
Shawn Levy is directing 20th Century Fox’s Free Guy. The movie is a sci-fi action comedy which revolves around a bank teller realizing he’s a NPC from an open-world video game. The characters find out that the servers for the game are soon being shut down, thus leading on an adventure to prevent their own demise.
A targeted rating for Levy’s Free Guy video game movie wasn’t revealed. So the movie could either head the route of something akin to Grand Theft Auto, or target a more family friendly audience with something that feels more like the Lego version of games. Though with Levy’s track record of comedies it’s more likely the latter.
Levy’s history of comedies includes some notable one. The director is behind Ben Stiller’s Night at the Museum trilogy, as well as Just Married, Cheaper by the Dozen, The Pink Panther, Date Night and The Internship.
As for Levy’s Free Guy cast, Ryan Reynolds will play the lead as the now self-aware bank teller. He’s joined by the fantastic Taika Waititi and the dreamy Joe Keery. As well as Lil Rel Howery, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Jodie Comer, Camille Kostek, Jamaal Burcher and Bob Gilliam.
Fox’s Free Guy video game movie is being produced by both Ryan Reynolds and Shawn Levy’s production houses of Maximum Effort and 21 Laps. Joining them as producers are Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Adam Kolbrenner of Berlanti Productions.
With Detective Pikachu being a success for Warner Bros., hopefully 20th Century Fox’s Free Guy can continue the trend of video game movies finally heading in the right direction. Which would then make Ryan Reynolds a bastion of sorts for the long languishing genre. Free Guy hits theaters July 3rd, 2020.
