John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum released less than a week ago, but Lionsgate already likes what they see as far as box office receipts go. So much so, that the studio has already confirmed that John Wick 4 is in the works.
Lionsgate used viral marketing that would text people’s phones with clips and teasers for Chapter 3. Those that haven’t opted out of the film’s marketing received a new text message yesterday: It was quick but to the point, saying “You have served. You will be of service. John Wick: Chapter 4 is coming – May 21, 2021.” Which just so happens to be exactly two years from today.
There have been numerous trailers for Parabellum that have been damn effective in getting Wick fans hyped for Chapter 3. But it’s the numbers that prove to Lionsgate that this franchise will continue to have legs.
2014’s John Wick was a little known new IP that generated a ton of buzz pretty quickly. It was a sound investment by Lionsgate too, as on a budget of between $20 and $30 million it saw a return of about $88.8 million following its run.
John Wick: Chapter 2 hit theaters a little over two years later and saw even further success. The first movie’s cult following blossomed into the mainstream with the sequel. With just a slightly larger budget $40 million, Chapter 2 went on to an impressive box office run of $171.5 million. Making John Wick 3 a must for the studio.
In less than a week, Chapter 3 has already accumulated $57 million domestically and $36 million overseas to accrue $93 million in total revenue – again, in under a week. So it’s pretty clear that Chapter 3 is well on its way to be the most successful monetarily in the series to date. It’s not doing too bad critically either as it holds a Certified Fresh rating of 88%.
If you’ve yet to see the third installment, you should have plenty of time to catch it as its run has just begun. And there’s also a new video game on the way entitled John Wick: Hex to help tide us over until the May 2021 release date of John Wick 4.
