The Gardens Between, previously announced for PS4, Xbox One, and PC, will be coming to Nintendo Switch the same day. Usually Switch owners get the short end of the stick when it comes to release dates but not this time! Developed by The Voxel Agents, this adventure puzzler has a charming artstyle and a surreal twist on this story of friendship.
Manipulate time to solve puzzles and guide these two best friends through a surreal world of mysterious gardens. These environments are littered with objects from Arina and Frendt’s past. The player’s goal is to reach the top of each isle and light up the constellations of memories, designed to craft a bittersweet narrative.
The Gardens Between is an homage to the friendships from our childhoods that felt so impossibly large that the bonds could never be broken,” says Simon Joslin, co-founder of The Voxel Agents. “We took inspiration from our own childhoods when building the narrative of The Gardens Between. We wanted to tap into something relatable, familiar, and nostalgic. The magic of being a kid is fleeting, but the story of Arina and Frendt captures that enchantment in a beautiful package.”
Personally, I love a good puzzle and am moved by the presentation of this game. I’m less sold, however, on the narrative component of this adventure. Having played a lot of puzzle games I often find stories either end up feeling tacked on or are so barely present that they become devoid of all true meaning. Still, there’s promise here. The magic, whimsy, and darkness undercutting each available screenshot of the game has me sold.
If your childhood was represented by a series of isles, what objects would clutter it. Let us know in the comments and tell us if you’re going to pick up The Gardens Between.
