Ever since it was first revealed that HBO and Damon Lindelof would be partnering once again, this time on a Watchmen adaptation, we’ve been intrigued. Today, we finally get to see a quick glimpse of the world Lindelof is building as the first Watchmen trailer has hit the web.
Lindelof has long claimed that his Watchmen series will not be a direct adaptation of Alan Moore’s iconic graphic novel. Instead, he previously noted that “this new story must be original.” However, he a lengthy memo to fans, he does consider Moore’s book to be the series’ “Old Testament.”
Nearly a year ago, Lindelof explained that “Those original twelve issues are our Old Testament. When the New Testament came along it did not erase what came before it. Creation. The Garden of Eden. Abraham and Isaac. The Flood. It all happened. And so it will be with ‘Watchmen.’ The Comedian died. Dan and Laurie fell in love. Ozymandias saved the world and Dr. Manhattan left it just after blowing Rorschach to pieces in the bitter cold of Antarctica.”
From what we can tell within this first Watchmen trailer, this holds true. It appears that Rorschach’s work has inspired an uprising. A new cult of those sporting masks just like his own. And it looks as though they’re targeting the authority and police force the now no longer trust, forcing authorities to hide their identity from the public.
The cast that Lindelof has assembled for his Watchmen series is loaded with talent too. Regina King, who worked with Lindelof on The Leftovers will play the series’ lead. Alongside her includes the likes of Don Johnson, Tim Blake Nelson, Louis Gossett Jr., Adelaide Clemens, Andrew Howard, Jeremy Irons, Tom Mison, Frances Fisher, Jacob Ming-Trent, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Sara Vickers.
HBO hasn’t given us a premiere date for the new series, just this initial Watchmen trailer to tease us for what’s to come. The network did confirm that we’ll see the show arrive at some point this fall.
