Top 9 Best New TV Shows of 2015 You Need to Watch

Mr. Robot seemingly came out of nowhere, taking us by surprise by being unexpectedly great. We didn’t expect USA Network to be able to release such a quality, multi-layered show, but with Mr. Robot, that’s exactly what they’ve done. The show follows Elliot, a young computer programmer who suffers from severe social anxiety disorder and copes by hacking those who are doing bad things; he’s a hacker for a good cause, if you will. But when he’s recruited by a mysterious anarchist who calls himself Mr. Robot, the layers start peeling back like an onion, and we soon find out there’s a lot more to the story. In our Mr. Robot Season 1 review, we noted that it felt like Dexter, but with hacking. And, that’s a great thing.

Starring: Gemma Chan, Katherinee Parkinson, Lucy Carless

If you love sci-fi TV, then you’ll love the Humans TV series. It sounds like the typical robots vs. humans story, but it’s so much deeper than just that. What happens when robots become sentient beings? If a robot commits a crime on its own, should its owner be jailed or should the robot just be destroyed? With “Synths” being the most sought after home gadget for any busy family, what happens when a sentient synth enters a family’s home? If a husband has sex with a synth, is it considered cheating? These are all questions that the AMC series tries to tackle, and they’re ripe for debate among friends. The acting in the Humans series is great, the story is multi-layered and intriguing, and soon enough, you’ll find yourself caring for robots like you never thought you would. And, luckily, Humans was renewed for Season 2.

Starring: Aml Ameen, Doona Bae, Jamie Clayton, Tina Desai, Tuppence Middleton, Max Riemelt, Miguel Angel Silvestre, Brian J. Smith, Freema Agyeman, Daryl Hannah

You’ll notice that I included the entire core Sense8 cast above, and that’s because they all shine in the series. It might be too soon to call Netflix the king of TV just yet, but they’re clearly heading in that direction. Sense8 follows a group of people from different corners of the globe whom are suddenly linked together mentally, and they must find a way to survive being hunted by an organization who sees them as a threat to the world. But it’s more than just telepathy, as the group can feel, hear, smell, see, and seemingly touch their surroundings when communicating with one of the other people from the group. It’s a truly unique show that pushes the boundaries of television, and it’s one of the reasons that the show is a standout among even the best new shows of 2015.

Starring: Charlie Cox, Vincent D’Onofrio, Deborah Ann Woll, Rosario Dawson, Elden Henson

If you look at the CW’s run of superhero shows, it’s undeniable that they’re all aimed at teens. Daredevil, on the other hand, is clearly intended for more mature audiences, and that’s why it blew up the internet when it debuted earlier this year. It’s much darker in tone than anything you’d find on network television. The fight scenes are great, the banter is great, and the characters are multi-layered. Vincent D’Onofrio is especially a standout among the rest of the Daredevil cast, and we believe the series could become the best superhero TV series of the last ten years.

Starring: Rose McIver, Malcolm Goodwin, Rahul Kohli, Robert Buckley

Comic book TV shows are popular, and zombies are popular, so what happens when you combine the two? IZombie. The series follows a medical resident who finds herself a zombie, basically forcing her to join a coroner’s office to gain access to brains for food. She knows it’s gross, but you ‘gotta do what you ‘gotta do. With every brain she eats, she gains the memories from those brains. She uses the newly discovered information to solve deaths with the help of a medical examiner and a police detective. Teeny? Sure. Fun? Absolutely.

Starring: Hayley Atwell, James D’Arcy, Chad Michael Murray

We’ve already mentioned the role that Agent Carter has played in fueling the rise of TV’s female heroes, but it also happens to be one of our favorite new TV shows of 2015. It’s set in 1946 New York, with the story following Peggy Carter in a post-war story of espionage, and you don’t need to know a ton of Marvel history to fully appreciate the drama. The Agent Carter cast is phenomenal, and the show is one of the most unique period dramas on television. Season 2 will premiere in January 2016, and we can’t wait to see more of what Peggy Carter has to offer viewers.

Starring: Will Forte, January Jones, Kristen Schaal

The Last Man on Earth was surprisingly funny, although it worked best in Season 1 when main character, Phil Miller, was truly on his own for awhile. After finding others, in the form of Kristen Schaal and January Jones, things are still interesting, but in a different way. It also makes us wonder what we would do if we were alone in this world (spoiler: it involves a swimming pool filled with alcohol). Will Forte’s comedic deliver throughout the series has been absolute gold so far, and here’s to hoping The Last Man on Earth continues its dry humor.

Starring: Melissa Benoist, Mehcad Brooks, Chyler Leigh, Jeremy Jordan

We are just as surprised as you are to see Supergirl make this list of the best new shows of 2015, but so far, so good. Some viewers have called it teeny, but it’s no more teen-oriented than The CW’s Arrow or The Flash. It’s hard to say exactly why Supergirl works as well as it does — at least so far — but we’re going to keep watching to see if we ever get tired of Kara Zor-El. Admittedly, after seeing more episodes, we’re starting to be turned off by the series, but it’s too early to tell whether it’s a dud yet.

Starring: Aziz Ansari, Noel Wells, Lena Waithe

We all knew that Aziz Ansari was great from what we saw in Parks and Recreation and his stand-up routines. We had no idea he was as great as he is in Master of None, which is now one of our favorite new TV series of 2015. Not only is the series filled with hilarious moments, but it also takes a poignant approach when tackling social issues, such as race and gender inequality, relationship issues, and, most notably, appreciating your parents. The show will definitely launch Aziz Ansari to being “that guy on Parks and Rec” to being a superstar. Our only gripe with the show is that it’s just 10 episodes, but we can’t wait for a Season 2.
